SAXON FROME
A walking tour around the ancient centre of Frome focusing on its Saxons origins, from its legendary founding by St Aldhelm in 685AD to the Norman conquest and Domesday Book of 1086. Lisa Kenwright will guide you through the remaining traces of the earliest settlement and place the town into the wider context of Wessex in the 7th to 10th centuries, sharing stories of Aldhelm, Athelstan, Eadred and Alfred himself along the way. The walk will begin outside the entrance to Frome Library in Market Yard and finish at Gore Hedge. The route is mostly on pavement with some steps, with a step-free alternative, and includes some steep cobbled streets. Led by local historian and storyteller Lisa Kenwright.
