FROME'S HIDDEN STREETS
Discover how Britain’s earliest worker’s housing faced the wrecking ball — and how locals fought to protect their heritage.

The Trinity area is one of the most important parts of historic Frome. Built from 1660 onwards, Built from 1660 onwards, it’s the UK's oldest example of a planned industrial neighbourhood. Yet, in the 1960s, the planners started demolishing the houses and even intended to run a major road through the area – until, that is, the people of Frome raised such an outcry that the bulldozers were halted. This walk reveals Trinity’s hidden secrets, from the earliest Stuart and Georgian buildings, through to partial demolition in the 1960s, and the huge campaign to save the remaining buildings from the wrecking ball. The tour is Led by local historian and author David Lassman. Note: we will not be entering any buildings during the tour.




Historically Important
In the 1960s, the planners started demolishing the houses and even intended to run a major road through the area – until, that is, the people of Frome raised such an outcry that the bulldozers were halted. Two-thirds of the area was bulldozed in 'slum clearance'.
Completely Unique
Featuring a distinctive grid pattern, and designed to accommodate the town's growing population of textile workers in the cloth industry., the Trinity area of Frome was built between 1660 and 1756. Easy Access
If you're from out of town, Frome is easily accessible by train, bus and car. The route is mostly level. We'll meet in the city centre, and end up not far from where we started. And if you're a Fromie, this is not to be missed.
